Omar Apollo Blooms
Size : 5x4 ft
Medium: Acrylic and Spray Paint on Canvas
Artist Statement: Inspired by the Gayletter magazine cover, issue # 17, cover & interview of Omar Apollo. Original photo taken by Fabian Guerrero, and interview lead by Elias Baez. What was most inspiring of this interview is Omar’s reflection of working with past record labels, and learning his boundaries as an artist, trusting his instincts. Taking risk, and not afraid to start over if it means staying true to his heart when it comes to his art. A quote that stood out to me from Omar’s interview, “…my whole life, I've always tried to exist outside of my comfort zone because the only way you grow is through like, suffering. Which sounds crazy, but it's true. Once you stop suffering, you stop learning. And then you get into like, clinging, and that's a whole other thing. For me, I've always been like, if I wanna do some-thing, I have to start from zero. Get out of my comfort zone. Even with people, you have traumas from past relationships, this, that... where you're afraid to be vulnerable, afraid to open up”. Omar Apollo, a Mexican, Queer, R&B artist who has been inspiring to witness these last couple years as his career blossoms. His personality, energy, and vibe balanced with his talents, makes him stand out as an artist. I appreciate his vulnerability as an artist in this interview with Elias. Within this painted portrait of Omar, I honor his image with my signature spray paint design, surrounded with flowers, I celebrate him.
